FAQ Background

Questions & answers

Here you'll find answers to the most important questions about the 31DAYS challenge.

How 31DAYS works

For 31 days, participants get a free GA travelcard and can use the services of selected sharing providers for free. In return, they commit to leaving their private car in the garage during this time.

- You sign up with your household on our website. If you are selected, you get an e-mail invitation from us. - You install the 31DAYS app, upload the photos of your vehicle registration document and number plate, and choose a start date. - On the first day, you upload a photo of your mileage with the daily code from the app. After that, the challenge GA and the other offers are unlocked. - For 31 days, your registered car stays parked, for other people too. - On day 31, you upload the photo of your final mileage.

We are happy to help you with every step in the chat.

The 31DAYS challenge is an official project run together with partners such as the Alliance SwissPass and SBB. You can check the partnership directly on sbb.ch. We understand that offers like this can seem unusual, and it is absolutely fine to check first. If anything is unclear, get in touch with us at any time.

Anyone living in German-speaking Switzerland who owns or regularly uses a car of their own and is willing to rethink how they get around can take part in the national challenge. For the regional challenge in Basel-Stadt, commuters from Germany and France can also apply.

31DAYS is aimed specifically at car owners, because that is where the potential for real change is greatest. If you don't have a car, you are already an important step ahead! 🎉 Your contribution still counts: the more people switch, the more noticeable it becomes for everyone – cleaner air, less noise, safer streets for children and more liveable cities. And the more successful 31DAYS is, the greater the political pressure to invest in better public transport, more cycle paths and safe pedestrian zones – which benefits you directly.

Yes. Only the team leader needs a car, team members don't. A team is made up of up to 8 people from the same household, or 7 people and a dog.

The programme is aimed specifically at people who want to change how they get around and who own or regularly use a car of their own. The terms of participation are designed to make the programme's impact as large as possible.

Write to us in the chat at any time if something isn't working, data is wrong or you are unsure. Once a person takes over, it can take up to 72 hours to get a reply.

Registration & selection

Via our website www.31days.ch.

Check your spam folder and the spelling of your e-mail address. If nothing arrives, get in touch with us.

Each person can only sign up once per year. Among other things, we recognise this by the e-mail address and the SwissPass customer number, both when you sign up on the website and when you add team members in the app. This also applies to a registration that was not completed.

First check whether you have already signed up before: look in your inbox and spam folder for a confirmation e-mail from us. If it is a duplicate profile, write to us in the chat with the e-mail address and the SwissPass customer number (10 digits, e.g. 123-456-789-0) of the person who is shown as already registered. We will then check this and delete the duplicate profile.

Anyone who has already taken part in a 31DAYS challenge cannot take part again: the challenge GA can only be used once in a lifetime. A registration in a previous year in which you did not take part, on the other hand, is no obstacle. If a challenge GA is nevertheless redeemed a second time, we reserve the right to claim back the value of the redeemed GA travelcard.

Places are allocated on an ongoing basis. If you are selected, you get an e-mail invitation from us. We don't send rejections: you stay in the pool and can move up at any time.

We only send rejections in a few exceptional cases, for example if there is no car of your own or if someone else's vehicle or a company vehicle is registered. Otherwise, after signing up you automatically stay in the pool of possible participants, from which new teams are selected on an ongoing basis.

An algorithm takes several factors into account, such as place of residence, access to public transport and previous usage patterns. On this basis, we can identify people with a realistic potential to change their behaviour.

We deliberately don't disclose the exact selection criteria. This way we avoid targeted false information in the application process and can keep developing the algorithm.

Our goal is a fair selection. Above all, we want to reach people for whom a month without their own car is doable in everyday life and who could change how they get around in the longer term too.

31DAYS is aimed primarily at people who regularly use a car today and are open to rethinking how they get around. Selection is based on various criteria. The aim is to reach people for whom a month without their own car is realistic and for whom long-term change is possible.

That's no problem. The condition is that the car is registered to a person in the same household.

Company cars are generally not allowed. An exception applies if you are self-employed and also use the same vehicle in your everyday life. Leased cars are allowed.

No, you must own a car at least when the challenge starts. If you sell the car during the challenge, please contact us, as you won't be able to upload a final mileage at the end of the challenge.

App, team & start

Search for "31DAYS" (green icon with a yellow bee) in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

The app is the central tool for the challenge. That's where you upload your start and end photos, choose your start date, get access to all partner offers and receive ongoing information about the challenge. Unfortunately, we can't handle your participation without the app.

Check your e-mail address, your spam folder, or whether you unsubscribed from e-mails in the past. If it still doesn't work, get in touch with support.

This is how you add team members:

- Open the 31DAYS app - Go to your team section - Choose "Add team members" - Invite people from your household by e-mail

Important: from the start of your challenge, you have 72 hours to add team members. After that, the team is fixed. A team is made up of up to 8 people from the same household (or 7 people and 1 dog).

Yes, we offer weekly webinars and video tutorials.

First you choose a start window (usually one week). Places are limited. Within this window, you can start on any day you like. The start time doesn't matter.

By the last day of the start window you chose.

Depending on how far along you are in the registration process, you can start as early as tomorrow. To start, you need to have installed the app and uploaded the vehicle documents, these must have been verified, and you must have chosen the corresponding start window.

Yes, you can do that in the 31DAYS app.

Download the app, log in, upload photos of your number plate and vehicle documents, and then choose a start date.

On the first day, you officially start your 31DAYS challenge. The app guides you through the start step by step:

- You upload a photo of your mileage, with the code you get in the app. This confirms the start of your challenge. - After that, all partner offers are unlocked, for example your SBB challenge GA, Mobility, e-bikes and other offers. - It's best to allow 10–20 minutes to activate everything at your leisure.

You collect them through activities in the app and can use them to unlock features or perks.

Your challenge GA

You'll find your voucher code for the challenge GA in the 31DAYS app as soon as you have uploaded the photo of your mileage on the first day of your challenge:

- In the timeline, open "Redeem vouchers" and choose the SBB challenge GA. - Copy your code and open SBB's challenge GA offer via "Go to offer". You can only get to the challenge GA via this link; you won't find it in the SBB webshop. - Log in with your SwissPass login. - With the challenge GA for adults, you can choose an upgrade to 1st class for a surcharge if you'd like to try it for a month. - In the last step, enter your code under "Payment method". This reduces the price to zero (with the 1st class upgrade, only the surcharge remains). - Complete the purchase.

For team members under 16, the codes appear in the team captain's app.

That's normal: after redeeming, it can take a while for the challenge GA to appear in the SBB app. It is already valid, though: the ticket inspector on the train sees it straight away when scanning the QR code in your SBB app. If you'd like to check, log in at swisspass.ch – the challenge GA appears there straight away. If you can't see it there either, check that you redeemed the voucher as described under "How do I get my challenge GA?" and completed the purchase.

First check that you entered the code in full and without typos. The safest way is to copy it directly from the 31DAYS app. Maybe a team member has already redeemed the code. If neither applies, send us a screenshot of the error message in the chat.

You can apply for a SwissPass on swisspass.ch, online or at an SBB ticket counter. If you already have a Half Fare travelcard or GA travelcard, you already have a SwissPass.

Yes. Every team member aged 6 and over gets their own GA travelcard. Team members aged 16 and over install the 31DAYS app and get their own voucher. For team members under 16, the vouchers appear in the team captain's app.

People who already have a GA travelcard can also take part in the challenge. In this case, the challenge GA cannot be redeemed.

The challenge GA is valid for one calendar month. If you redeem it in May, it is valid for 31 days; if you redeem it in June, for 30 days. You can see the exact validity in your account on swisspass.ch. The SBB app also shows the validity, but after purchase it can take a moment for the challenge GA to appear there. If you redeem the challenge GA on the first day of the challenge and it is only valid for 30 days, you won't need it on day 31: you upload your final mileage in the morning and can then use your car again.

Yes, you can take a bike on public transport. However, 31DAYS doesn't include an offer for this – the GA travelcard does not cover taking a bike along. Please check sbb.ch and buy a valid ticket.

Yes, the challenge GA is valid on mountain railways and boats just like a regular GA travelcard. You'll find the exact area of validity on sbb.ch.

Yes, the companion ticket can be used together with your challenge GA when another person travels with you.

Yes, in combination with your challenge GA you can additionally buy a class upgrade for individual journeys or for a whole month.

Yes! Each team can bring a maximum of one dog to the 31DAYS challenge for free. 🐶

Important for the journey: The dog pass, or rather the promo code to redeem it, can only be found in the team captain's app (in the message with the instructions for redeeming it).

If another team member travels on public transport with the dog, please make absolutely sure before setting off that the dog pass has been redeemed in time and can be shown during ticket inspection – this way you avoid confusion and a fine on the train.

Your dog also travels to the vet on public transport with the dog pass: an ordinary visit to the vet is no reason to use the car. In an emergency, the same exception applies as for people (see "Are there exceptions, for example in emergencies?").

In this case, please contact SwissPass directly.

Partner offers

During your challenge, you get access to various free or discounted mobility and partner offers. You can see which offers apply to you in the 31DAYS app as soon as your challenge has started. The offers differ depending on the challenge and region.

All offers are shown to you in the app on the first day of your challenge, as soon as you have uploaded your mileage photo.

Each offer comes with step-by-step instructions in the app. That's also where you'll find all details and conditions.

The challenge vouchers must be redeemed by the end of your challenge.

Rules during the challenge

No. Your registered car must stay parked for the entire 31 days. Other people may not use it either: what counts is the car's mileage, no matter who drives it. Only one car per team has to stay parked.

For the challenge, one vehicle per team is registered, and it is not moved during the 31 days. Only this one car counts for the official record. In the spirit of the challenge, though, it would be ideal if all household members also did without the other vehicles during this time: it's the only way to find out whether everyday life really works without a car.

On the first and last day, you take a photo of the mileage with a daily code from the app.

No. What's required is a photo of the mileage at the start and at the end, a photo of the vehicle registration document, a photo of the number plate, and that the car stays parked for 31 days.

In rare cases, such as a medical emergency with a hospital stay, yes. This applies to emergencies involving people just as much as to emergencies involving your pet. Get in touch with us directly within 48 hours and we'll find a solution together. As proof, we need confirmation from the doctor, the hospital or the vet's practice that there was an emergency.

No. Regular or plannable trips, such as to recurring doctor's or hospital appointments, are not an emergency: the registered car stays parked for these too. The only exception is one we have approved in advance. To ask for one, get in touch with support before the first trip.

During the 31DAYS challenge, you commit to leaving your own car parked. The photo of the mileage at the start and at the end of the 31 days serves as proof.

We allow a deviation of 5 km, for example if you have to move the car because the underground car park is being cleaned. If the mileage at the end of the challenge (after 31 days) is more than 5 km higher than the mileage at the start, we reserve the right to claim back the cost of the challenge GAs received from the participants of the team concerned. The same applies if the photo of the final mileage is not uploaded: we then have to assume that the car was driven. Emergencies are excluded from this, provided they are reported to us proactively no later than 48 hours before or after the event.

Get in touch with support and briefly tell us why you are stopping and whether challenge GA codes have already been redeemed in your team. We will then end your participation. From that moment on, the challenge offers may no longer be used: we block them with our mobility partners, in particular the challenge GA.

End of the challenge

Day 1 is the day you start – regardless of the time. On day 31, you can upload your final mileage in the 31DAYS app in the morning and then use your car again.

In the 31DAYS app, right at the bottom of the timeline: from day 24, the button "Go to final mileage & rewards" appears there. You can upload the photo from day 31, in the morning. Make sure the daily code from the app is clearly legible in the photo.

That's normal: we check every final mileage by hand, and approval can take up to 24 hours. After that, you'll see your rewards in the app. Important: the daily code must be clearly legible in the photo, otherwise the challenge counts as not completed. If you still can't see anything after 24 hours, get in touch with us in the chat.

That's right: from day 31 you can use your car again, and the challenge offers expire.

Photos, data & privacy

We need a photo of the vehicle registration document, a photo of the number plate, and one photo each of the mileage at the start and at the end of the challenge. What happens to this data and how long it is kept is set out in the privacy policy on 31days.ch.

The photo is used to make sure that the vehicle belongs to you and only takes part in the challenge once.

We use the data to run 31DAYS – for example to issue the GA travelcard or to check participation. We also analyse the information to assess applications, measure the programme's impact and develop 31DAYS further. We disclose all purposes in the privacy policy.

Idea & goals

The programme aims to get drivers to rethink their usual way of getting around and to try out alternatives such as public transport or sharing in everyday life. The goal is to win over as many drivers as possible for climate-friendly mobility and public transport.

The idea came about in summer 2022 at MOVA, the national camp of the Swiss Guide and Scout Movement. There, 42hacks brainstormed with the scouts how parents could be encouraged to travel in a more climate-friendly way.

In one of the workshops, the young people asked a simple question: "What if parents swapped their car keys for a GA travelcard for a month?" This thought later became the basic idea for 31DAYS: trying out for a month what everyday life feels like without your own car – and seeing what changes.

A month gives enough time to build new everyday routines and test them repeatedly. Shorter periods are often not enough to change established habits or to check realistically whether everyday life works without your own car.

Many participants don't just travel within their own region in everyday life – they commute, visit family or travel to leisure activities. For the challenge, trying out public transport should be as easy as possible. With a GA travelcard, participants don't have to think about where a boundary runs or whether they need an extra ticket. This way they can try out public transport for a month without any hassle – wherever they go.

No. 31DAYS is a voluntary initiative that invites people to try out new forms of mobility. The aim is to get to know sustainable and climate-friendly alternatives to the car. Taking part is voluntary and nobody is forced to give up their car.

The aim of 31DAYS is to win more people over to public transport for good.

Anyone who gets around without their own car for a month gets to know the alternatives – and often keeps using them afterwards.

The public transport sector and the participating cities and cantons (e.g. through mobility funds or subsidies) fund the challenge together.

Impact & results

31DAYS gets many participants to use public transport more often. Satisfaction with the programme is high.

Some households sold their car after the challenge. This also makes it possible to demonstrate concrete CO₂ savings.

The feedback and evaluations so far are positive. However, they come from smaller local projects and cannot be transferred one-to-one to larger regions. By expanding 31DAYS, we now want to test exactly these experiences on a larger scale and be able to assess them better.

Experience so far shows that some participants noticeably change how they get around. In Winterthur, for example, around one in seven participating households sold a car after the challenge.

This shows that anyone who organises everyday life without their own car for a month often discovers practical and cheaper alternatives. You can work it out: car cost calculator

The evaluations so far show that some participants keep up their new behaviour after the challenge and use public transport more often. The results give clear indications of lasting change. At the same time, the data comes from projects that are still young and fairly small, which is why the long-term impact continues to be monitored.

The accompanying study by ZHAW shows that 31DAYS gets many participants to rethink their mobility and to have positive experiences with public transport.

Whether some of them would have sold their car later even without the challenge cannot be ruled out. But 31DAYS can trigger this decision or speed it up considerably. That is why findings from the control group now also feed into the selection of participants.

Some participants reported technical hurdles or found the change in everyday life challenging. Feedback like this is analysed and feeds into the further development of the programme. Overall, the positive experiences outweigh the negative ones.

Regions & expansion

The challenge took place in Bern in 2023, in Winterthur in 2024, in Basel-Stadt in 2025 and in Lucerne in 2026.

The national challenge is currently running across the whole of German-speaking Switzerland. In addition, there are currently regional challenges (with additional partners, events, etc.) in Basel-Stadt (including commuters from Germany and France), Dübendorf, St. Gallen, Bern, Thun, the city of Fribourg and Valais.

The public transport sector is deliberately expanding 31DAYS step by step. This way, experience from previous rounds can be evaluated and the programme can be developed in a targeted way.

This approach ensures that organisational and financial resources are used where they have the greatest impact.

The results of the previous rounds have been positive for participants, partner cities and cantons, and the public transport sector. That's why we are scaling up the campaign.

For participants, nothing changes (compared with the last round in Basel). Apply on www.31days.ch, choose your start date, travel in a climate-friendly way for 31 days. The only difference: more people can benefit from the challenge.

In Basel, we built and successfully tested the digital and scalable foundation for 31DAYS.

For the expansion, we are specifically strengthening customer support and building up additional resources. This way we make sure that participants continue to be well looked after.
